Bike tires are not unlike sneakers – there are so many kinds for different types of exercise, from commuting, to road racing and then to mountain biking. You might see a set of road racing tires on a mountain bike and vice versa – the type of the tire one uses depends more on where one uses the bike, and not necessarily on what kind of bike it is.
Types of Tires
We can find two basic kinds of tires – mountain tires and road tires. Mountain tires are usually wider and they have a knobby tread, while the road tires are narrow with hardly any tread at all. But there are a lot of different nuances among these two types – according to best hybrid bikes under 500 on omisport.com, there are cyclist out there who use their mountain bikes in the streets and there are special tires designed for this type of individuals called mountain bike road tires. In the spring of 2002, a pickup truck crossed the centerline of a Louisiana road at high speed and plowed into a group of cyclists. Seventeen-year-old Timothy Cappo, one of the cyclists, was badly injured and died that night in the hospital. The truck driver was charged with negligence.

How can accidents like this be prevented? Cyclists need to take measures to reduce their odds of getting hurt.
Cappo was struck on a narrow, winding road that cyclists favor for training. Because they’re narrow, these roads can be dangerous when motorists are careless. Bikers should try to use either a bike path that’s closed to vehicles or a wide road with plenty of room for cyclists. Ideally, cyclists should stay 3 to 5 feet to the side of cars and trucks. The author and a teddy bear face some zany challenges in a run-and-ride race. Not the least of which is a table full of Spam.
It’s not so easy to ride a mountain bike down a trail that falls away faster than Niagara Falls. The feat requires sharp reflexes and rapid-fire assessment of the available options. But just try it while clutching a teddy bear over your head.
I drop Teddy. He falls beneath my front wheel, is ground into the dirt, then flung skyward on the back stroke, where he spins several pirouettes before landing in a puff of dust. I dismount, dash back and snatch him up. Despite the tread mark crossing his fuzzy yellow belly, he’s still worth 3 minutes–a time handicap I sorely need. I jam him head first into my shorts. This might seem callous, but there’s no time for sentimentality. Ahead of me, runners carrying cardboard turkeys, inflatable reindeer and 3-foot bears are charging off down the trail. As any veteran runner will attest, lots can go wrong before a race. And believe us, a last-minute goof is the last thing you need after weeks or months of training. * The following guide will ensure that the nightmare scenario–missing clothes, no timing chip, stuck in traffic–will never happen to you, and that you’ll arrive on the starting line ready to roll. * Most of the advice applies to any race distance, but it’s especially important before a longer race such as a marathon, which requires more preparation.
The Day Before
Logistics: Double-check directions to the start on a street map, or print a map and directions from MAPQUEST.COM. Gas up the car. Read the entire entry form, which may contain crucial information about checking in, parking, or some other race detail that affects what time you need to arrive. Finally, pack your race bag (see “Race-Day Checklist,” page 55) after checking the weather forecast.
Do all this early enough on the day before your race. This way, you’ll have ample time to hunt down any missing information or items you’ll need on race morning. If you procrastinate too long, you’ll have to deal with the stress of preface preparations at the worst possible time–bedtime.
